The Biography of Dr. Amy Bakelaar

Dr. Amy Bakelaar, also known as Dr. Amy, was born in southern Ontario.  She moved to Edmonton on a bit of a whim in 1999 and decided to stay.  The long summer nights are perfect for running, biking or attending festivals and sports events.  Even the Edmonton winters are a lot more fun now that she's discovered the joys of stylish boots!

Dr. Bakelaar has been an optometrist in St. Albert and Edmonton area since 1999.  Her patients love coming in for their annual eye exams and she frequently hears that "Nobody has ever checked my eyes that thoroughly before." and "I've never had so much fun during an eye exam!".  The kids love it - toys, hugs, and even candy at the end of the exam!

Oh, you should also ask her about her recent travels - she's always coming back from somewhere off the beaten track. Many of the trips involve volunteer work in communities needing eye-care or as disaster relief work. Other trips are simply exploring new vistas or hiking the trails. Most recently, there were trips to Bolivia, Italy, Mount Kilimanjaro, Lebanon, Paris and the Galapagos Islands.  Last summer involved a hiking trip through Tuscany and a few trips to the much-loved Rocky Mountains.

In the spring of 2013 she joined with Dr. Aaron Patel to supervise optometry students from Pacific University for an eye care trip to the underprivileged areas of Belize. Another volunteer trip to Ecuador with the Third World Eye Care Society in October/November 2013 was a lot of work (over 3500 eye exams in multiple locations around the country) - followed by a good long exploration of  the wonders of the Galapagos Islands!
